SQL Server 2000 Install Fails on XP Home SP2 - I have the log file and I can''t tell what needs to be fixed

  • This started when I tried to install ACT 2005. That install failed, apparently at the end of the install process when trying to install and access the SQL Server.

The ACT folks said to install MS SQL Server 2000 alone, before trying to install ACT (which would then use what is there).

    So I downloaded MSDE Release A - didn't work.

    Ditto MSDE 2000 SP4.

I don't know enough to know if the install parameters are incorrect, or if there is something in the XP Home SP2 (No Startup Items and No non-microsoft services loaded - that is no Norton Firewall and no NAV and no "a bunch of other stuff".

I have the log file and the ini file.

Please tell me I am not the only person with this problem.

And that there is a solution.

  • The problem is likely SP2 (without looking at the logs I can't be sure)  SP2 does not play nicely with SQL unless certain things are done.  It all has to do with security.  See http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=841249.  Take a look at this article as well http://www.windowsitpro.com/Articles/Index.cfm?ArticleID=43777&DisplayTab=Article

You may consider removing SP2 first, the installing SQL Server.  Then you may be able to put back SP2 after a bit of planning and set up.

  • Francis, thank you for your help and suggestions.

I don't want to remove SP2. My computer from Dell was shipped with the XP Home SP2 version pre-installed. And I don't want the hassle of having to remove and reinstall some or all of the OS and my apps if it screws up everything or most things.

I checked out the articles you referred me to, as well. Thank you for them.

These computers are frustrating! Too bad Toyota and Honda don't sell software. They know about design, engineering and reliability. (I feel better now.)

Norton Personal Firewall disabled the XP firewall during installation. I don't know if there are still active firewall elements in the operating system that are stopping the SQL install.

Knowing that SP2 and SQL don't play well together, the ACT folks at Best Software have their hands full. They're going to have to figure out how to get SQL to work on XP SP2 machines if they expect to sell more ACT software.

Francis, THANKS again for your response to my post.

    Barney
