install SQL 2016

  • Recently I upgraded one of my test machine SQL 2014 to SQL 2016,  uninstalled SQL 2014, then installed management studio 17.x.
    Installed Data tool.

But I found in start - apps, I see a lot of shortcuts for vNextCTP2.0.
    I did not install it.
Does it come from the install of SQL management studio 17.x, I don't remember when intalling. it gives an option to what to install.
    I don't need vNext.

Also another question, is it safte to uninstall SQL 2014 components from program and features- uninstall,  after it is upgraded to 2016 on the same machine?

    Thanks

  • Yes, SSMS comes with some SQL 17 CTP stuff, as it includes compatibility for it. This will probably change to "Microsoft SQL Server 2017" update your SSMS and after SQL 2017 officially releases.

And again, yes, they are separate applciations/services so uninstalling one will not effect the other.

  • Thanks!

  • I found after I upgraded to SQL 2016, and uninstalled 2014, when I want to change compatibility from 12 to 13, the compatibility level of master ,model, msdb, tempdb all have blank compatibility level, of course user database also have blank,  but I supposed they should have 2014 there, is that because I uninstalled 2014, so they no longer show 2014.

  • And actually I cannot see the dropdown box of compatibility level for all databases, it is empty.
    What could be wrong?

  • Found the issue, I used a SQL 2014 client to connect to this SQL 2016 instance.
changed to 2016 version of SSMS, the dropdown shows.

    Thanks
