  Hi all,
  long time reader, first time poster:

  On SQL Server 2016 documentation it is stated that in order to use the upgrade path from 2008R2 to 2016 I need to have at least SP3 applied on my 2008R2 installation.

  I find that kind of dubious.
  Does this mean I need to worry about this service pack level only when doing in-place upgrades, or this also applies even when backing up and restoring the databases on  another host with a new 2016 installation?

  Should be inplace only.

  The  restore process should take backups from 2005+

  I was working based on that.

  It seems only the database compatibility setting matters when backing up and restoring.
