We have an application (GoldMine 2014) that came with SQL 2008 Workgroup. We need to move this server to AWS EC2 instance. My understanding is that in general with standalone SQL license you can only to do it if you have Software Assurance. We of course don't have it as it came with the software. Have you guys seen situation where it was eligible to use embedded SQL DB in the cloud? Please don't ask me to call MS and ask them, as asking 3 diff MS reps may give me3 diff answers. I'm just asking what have you seen in real world scenarios
Thanks!

I have not seen that in reality with the licenses. You can move your license from one box to another if needed - you just need to have your license key and ensure the old server is shut down or the key removed from it.
That said, will AWS support your license? I do not see any workgroup models available on EC2. I also see that they support some editions of SQL Server that don't exist and some editions that are out of support and really should not be installed on new servers. So pick your poison carefully.

we would install it on EC2 instance running Windows Server 2008, 2008 R2 or higher (without SQL included) and install GoldMine with embedded SQL on top of it. BUt normally if you have standalone SQL, I understand you need SA t move to the cloud, here SQL comes with the product as a component.
but the side point you are making is right, they provide with some crazy old sofwtare, including Server 2003 R2!

standalone sql does not require SA to move to the cloud. You need your license key to move your sql license to a hosted provider in the cloud.
If you want to upgrade your sql key during the move, then you need to have SA.

If moving the license, I must caution that it is imperative to remove the license from the old box or shut it down completely. Not doing so would require the purchase of another license.
