A SQL Server 2014 key is for SQL Server 2014. A SQL Server 2016 key is for SQL Server 2016. The keys are not interchangable.
Backward compatibility means you can run a something from an older version on a newer version. This means you can run a 2014 database on a 2016 server. Much like if you to buy a PS3 that was back compatible, you could therefore run a PS2 game on it.
It does not mean that buying 2016 SQL Server means you can run and install SQL Server 2014. That would be like buying a PS3, and expecting it act as and like a PS2. They are different software/hardware.
Edit: P.s. What are you actually running here. You posted in the 2012 forum, stating "installing SQL Server 2012", but your post refers to only 2014 and 2016?

As far as I am know(I could be wrong) Microsoft introduced downgrade rights with SQL server 2014. So if your SQL Server 2016 license has been purchased under volume licensing contract then I think you can, but again as I said, I could be wrong. I would strongly recommend to contact your licensing person for more information because it's a case by case basis when it comes to SQL Server licensing.

Hi,
Just to clarify I have spoken with Microsoft you can use backward comaptibility with server 2016 standard core licensing. It can be down graded to sql 2014 stdandard core & microsoft will provide a separte key for the sql 2014 core version. Thanks for your help

I stand corrected, they are interchangeable 🙂
