Upgrade OS to 2012 R2 from 2008 R2

  • Hi,

    Thanks in advance.

We have a SQL Server 2012 two node cluster on Windows 2008 R2. Now we were asked to upgrade to Windows 2012 R2. How do we upgrade OS from 2008 R2 to 2012 R2 without affecting the SQL Server. How does it affect the SQL Server? What is the process?

  • My main objective would be to reduce risk, so I would aim to build a new cluster. You are using SQL2012 so you can use an AG to get your new cluster into sync with the old cluster.

At a convenient time, stop SQL on the old cluster, make the new cluster the AG publisher, and swap the DNS vanity name used to connect to the old cluster to use the new one. When you are happy all is OK break the AG group and decommission your old cluster.

This does not totally avoid an interruption to the SQL service, but you should have an outage of well under an hour while you do the swap.
