Tricky question about licensing of SQL developer edition.

  • Hi,

I have a problem with the licensing of our SQL servers. We have an environment with 40+ SQL servers divided into Test/dev, stage and production. A number of servers are physical but most of the developer servers are located in our vm environment. The vm environment is used for both production and development server (apart from SQL). Test/dev and stage are accessed by developers and indirectly by people doing tests.

I am convinced that we can use SQL development edition for the SQL development servers, but other people suggest that we need to use enterprise edition since other (non SQL servers) is used for production in the wm.

Is there someone who has any experience or knowledge about this?

  • You can use developer edition in this case. What you are doing with other softwares in the same machine has no impact on the licensing model for SQL Server.

Remember that you need a developer edition license for each developer connecting to the machine.

If you have a MSDN subscription, you can use the same exact edition you are using in production for test/developmente purpose with no additional costs and no need for individual developer edition licenses.

  • Thanks,

In this case the Licens experts are convinced that since we are using the VM host for both production and development - all development hosts must be fully licensed. I do not agree but have a hard time to convince the Licens guy.

  • fwiw I bought a dev edition for my own lab. I asked MS about licensing for other machines in my lab. The answer is that I can install it as many times as I like on as many machines as I like as long as I obey the Ts and Cs. So, $70 (canada) for 1 or a million servers
