Never Worked with SQL, but am interested in earning an MCSA in SQL Server 2012

  • Hi,

I have never worked with SQL before. I have been exposed to Access databases and can set up basic databases and relationships. I am interested in taking courses to earn a MCSA in SQL Server 2012. I would like to become a database administrator. Do you think that this is possible or do I need to start with another certification or have a lot of hands on experience first? I believe that the training course would start off teaching SQL code and then build up from there.

    Thank you in advance!

  • Experience >>>>> Certifications

From the MS site on one of the exams for that cert (461)

    Who should take this exam?

This exam is intended for SQL Server database administrators, system engineers, and developers with two or more years of experience, who are seeking to validate their skills and knowledge in writing queries.

  • Honestly, I wouldn't. I have been working SQL server for the last 14 years and as a production DBA for 6 years.

Having recently finished the MCSA in SQL 2012 the exams are not particularly easy (which is a good thing), the study materials will help affirm your knowledge and give you a taste for functionality but to answer the questions correctly you need hands on experience.

  • Thank you both for your help!
