New Server for Database

  • I am the IT manager for a small local government office. I am not a DBA. Both myself and the one tech that works for me are good at IT but have limited DBMS experience or knowledge. We recently purchased a new Dell T620 server. The new server has two 6-core HT Xeon processors 2.0ghz, 32G ram, Raid adapter with 1G ram, and 8 Near Line SAS (7200 rpm) hard drives. We do realize these hard drives are the weak point of the new server but we had to do the best we could with our limited budget. Our accounting server (ss 2005) needs some serious work done on it - re-do the raid, add HDD space, more RAM, re-install os and software. We plan to move the accounting package to the new server while re-building the old one, then move it back, or if there is equal or better performance on the new server (we're hoping better), then we would just leave the accounting package on it and use the old server elsewhere. The old server is a poweredge 1800 circa 2006, one 4-core Xeon 2.8G, 2G Ram, onboard raid controller, and 15k RPM drives in a Raid 5. What we're wondering is what kind of performance should we expect using this new machine as a DB server as compared to what we've had using the old poweredge ?

  • What do you plan to use for the OS? 32bit or 64bit?

  • 64 bit windows server 2008 R2 on the new server. The old server is 32 bit Server 2003 R2. The new server will use two bonded intel gigabit NICs where the old one is a single broadcom gigabit NIC.

    Thanks.

  • Staying with SQL Server 2005?

  • We'll probably have to use sql 2k5 since we don't have licensing or cals for 2008. We have sql 2012 but the accounting software will only run on 2k5 or 2k8 right now, they are going to have it running on sql 2012 in about 6 months but not yet.

  • If you have the 64 bit edition of SQL Server, I would expect some performance improvements based on amount of memory and the 64 bit address space.
