number of cpu's ???????

  • When i run 'systeminfo' from a command promt on my windows2008 server I get back the info amongst other things:

    Processor(s): 1 Processor(s) Installed.

    [01]:intel64 Family 6 MODEL 26 Stepping 5 GenuineIntel 2665 Mhz....

Then when if I open windows task manager or Resource monitor i can see 2 cpus in the 'cpu usage history' each one showing current activity.

Which bit of info do i use to determine the number of physical cpu's ? Why is there a difference in info ?

  • I believe this is because the systeminfo command shows the number of physical processors, while the task manager shows usage by logical processors. The task manager takes multi-core CPUs and hyperthreading into account.

  • Doesn't task manager show cores?

systeminfo might be returning physical sockets. Licensing used to be by sockets, so that might what's returned.
