I found an excellent example of logging in SSIS. Unfortunately I could not find the correct version of AdventureWorks (2005?) which be nice to have.
The package uses the RowCount Task. I noticed the Variable that it uses to capture the RowCount and the Input and Output parameters but I'm baffled on how it works and how to configure it.
Prior to SSIS I wrote a lot of DTS and I used a EXEC SQL Task with output parameter going to global variables.
