SQL server license

  • We have project based teams to develop software. For example there are 10 people in the group.

Each developer they have a developer license of sql server on their local box.

We also have a SQL box for testing and one for User Acceptance Test.

My question is can we use a developer version on the TESTing server, and also on the UAT sql server?Or we have to buy standard/enterprise + CALs, /processor based?

    Thanks

  • you can use developer versions as long as the instance will not be used for any production work.

  • Thanks, does one license only allow one user?

So if it is a testing SQL server for 10 developers and testers to use for testing purpose, is developer version Ok for the testing server, or it has to be either a standard or enterprise version?

This is what I get from Microsoft license site.

SQL Server 2008 Developer includes all of the functionality of Enterprise Edition, but is licensed only for development, test, and demo use. The license for SQL Server 2008 Developer entitles one developer to use the software on as many systems as necessary.

  • that seems to suggest its a one user license per server. I think you would be best talking to microsoft. An MSDN license may be best for you, that would allow you to install any version of SQL you want on any number of servers to be used by as many people as you want as long as they are not production servers.

  • Is there a phone number or forum on internet that I can ask microsoft license related questions?

    Thanks
