How to recreate a database in sql server 2008 express from sql server 7?

  • I have a sql server 7 database. I want to recreate or duplicate it and work on it in sql server 2008 r2.

Please tell me how to go about it??

  • You can't upgrade straight. You'll need and intermediate step to go to sql 2000 or 2005, then you'll be able to move to 2008 R2.

  • Okai. Could you please explain the steps I can follow.

I have sql server 2008 r2 and management studio already installed on the machine.

  • You need an instance of SQL 2000 or SQL2005. Restore the SQL 7 database there, change the compatability level to 80 or 90. Take a backup, restore on the SQL express.

Install express 2005. Backup from 7, restore on 2k5. Backup in 2k5 and restore again on 2k8. You'd be done then.
