Database Size

  • I am trying to answer the following question:

Estimate initial database size and expected growth (6 months and beyond).

This is difficult to do because all of the data that will be loaded into the database has not yet been defined. I know that initially I have about 4.5 million rows in 5 different tables. I can expect that this number will double over the next 12 months but should not grow significantly after that. I don't have details other than this general idea so I can't actually run calculations can I?

How would you answer this question? Is there some default 'large', 'medium', 'small' sizes for the database that I can just recommend or something to start with?

  • Here is a Microsoft article that gives you some ideas.

  • Hi Dan - thanks for the reply. I have seen this article but the problem is that I need more specifics regarding the actual fields that will be loaded in order to use these calculations. I don't have that information and won't have that information for a while. Unfortunately, the way things work here is that I need to get this request submitted before I have all the back end work of identifying the entities and attributes done. Therefore I don't have specifics to use in running calculations at this time.

I know this seems backwards, but if I wait until I have all the specifics I will have a huge gap between when I get the data pulls ready and when I have a place to store them. The database creation is out of my hands so I can't do them together. This means I have to make a recommendation on database size based on the limited information I currently have. I'm wondering what would be a good size to tell them to start with knowing only what I know now.

  • I would shoot as large as possible if they are going to make you predict a DB size based on such limited information. I would also clarify over and over again that any number you could come up with would be at best a wild guess and at worse horribly innaccurrate unless they are willing to allow for more information to be gathered.
