Access to local SQL Server database not possible when VPN connection active

  • It is not possible to access the local SQL database when the Aventail VPN connection has been established. However when not established it works fine though. So the Aventail product must somehow shut down access to the local port 1433? Is there a firewall setting or similar that could cause this?

  • The VPN client my company uses allows me to RDP to the server, but blocks all other network connections I would establish from the local desktop. Can't locally browse the web, can't use SSMS to access servers (except the local instance on my desktop of Dev Edition), can't e-mail, chat, etc. Can only go to remote desktops.

Is it possible your VPN client is doing the same thing to you?

If so, it's a security feature that's designed to prevent a variety of attack vectors into the network your VPNing into.
