Sql Server 2008 - 2005 compatibility for SSRS

  • I have Sql Server 2008 Developer edition installed on my development machine. If I create a BI SSRS project with a SQL Server 2005 instance on one of our production servers as the Data Source in Visual Studio 2008, can that report be deployed on that server? Or do I need to design and create the report through the Sql Server 2005 interface? Just to be clear, Sql Server 2005 is not installed on my dev machine at all, only Sql 2008 and VS 2008.

I'm a bit confused as to what versions of Visual Studio tie to what versions of Sql Server BI and what the possibilities are. I much prefer the newer report design features of VS 2008 but I'll be in big trouble if I spend time developing and then it can't be deployed on our Sql 2005 production server.

    Thanks, Bob Graham

  • Wow, welcome to the forum!!!

  • Robert, I also have the same question. For us, it isn't just about development. We currently have 3 reporting technologies within our system. Crystal and two home grown applications one of which uses ASP the other .NET.

We currently run 2005 Standard Edition on 64 bit machines. However, I would like to use 2008 SSRS as from everything I have read and heard, there is some pretty big improvement from 2005 to 2008. However, I am curious to know what, if any issues people have had with this or has things work flawlessly.

    Thanks,

    Fraggle.

  • Hey Fraggle-805517,

The best answer I found was in the general forum in this topic, second post:

Just not sure how authoritative that is.

PS: as you may have noted, I'm a bit unimpressed with the lack of moderators or habitual visiting experts coming to the aid of a Newbie question! Also not able to verify the link I'm putting will function. You may have to copy it to your address bar.
