Install SQL Small Business on a SBS 2008 Premium machine

  • The problem is :

A client had bought SBS 2008 Premium. I've installed on a machine the SBS package (Windows Server 2008 x64 R2) and set up all the accompanyiing stuff.......

When I try to install SQL Small Business Server 2008 on the same SBS machine (which is now a DC), I got errors saying that because of the existence of SQL Server Express databases (SBSMONITORING etc.) I can not continue !!!

So, my problem is HOW to install SQL Small Business Server ON THE SAME machine (and not any virtual) as the SBS......

I've also tried to name the instance a name other than the default, but with no effect. I also try to install all except the Management Studio tools on that server, but also with no effect.

    Thank you in advance !!!

  • i have an SBS 2008 server which has the default sql server embedded instance installed for SBS monitoring. I also have extra instances installed for web databases. Have you tried downloading SQL Server 2008 Express and installing that?

  • I don't want SQL Express but to install the SQL Small Business DVD that is WITH the SBS 2008 Premium package !!!

Also, I want Standard version of SQL because the databases I want to restore are pretty huge (the smaller one is 40 GB !!!), so SQL Express is out of the question by specification. Otherwise the cost of SBS 2008 Premium (that contains ONLY the SQL Small Business except from the software that is also in SBS 2008 Standard), is much more higher than SBS 2008 Standard and that's the reason of buying it : just for having SQL Small Business Server....

I also want to take advantage of the system's 12 GB or RAM !!!

  • i'll check what i have on my server at the weekend and let you know back

  • Thank you !!!

Even though I thought - after my search on the Internet - that is not possible to have it on the same server (except if you have it as a Hyper-V client or on another Windows 2008 x64 client).........
