Backup - Something about filesizes

  I have two almost identical databases, that both have a Full-recovery Model.

  They are 40 GB each, and there are used approx. 5 GB in each. (one 4 and one 6).

  When I make a full backup, the one reduces the backupsize til approx the used space (5 gb) and the other one is almost as big as the total db (40 GB).

  What controls if the free space should be backed up or not? Is there any error, or am I just doing something wrong.

  When last was a transaction log backup done for these databases. You can check on the properties of the Database - right at the top in SQL 2005
