Can one delete old errorlogs i.e. ERRORLOG.1. ERRORLOG.2 etc. or does one need to run a process to purge them?

No need to delete them. SQL only keeps a certain number (default 6) and automatically deletes the older ones. New error logs get created (and older ones deleted) whenever SQL is restarted or the error log is cycled. (sp_cycle_errorlog I think)

You want to keep a few around. When there are issues, it's possible someone will reboot 2-3 or more times and you don't want to have those logs gone. 6 is probably more than you need, but better to have 1-2 more than you need than not have them.
I have seen people that recycle them weekly so they don't get too large, but in that case I'd say you want to keep more like 10 around.
