Tool like Quest ServerCompare

  • Hello,

Is anybody aware of an inexpensive tool similar to the ServerCompare component of Quest Comparison Suite? I know that Toad includes it, but buying Toad seems like an expensive option when that is the only component I find useful. The data and schema compare are ok, but I already have Red Gate's compare tools, and I like them better.

For those who aren't familiar with Comparison Suite, it was a freeware set of tools offered by Quest a couple of years ago that included data, schema, and server comparison. The server comparison component compared things like server configurations, database settings, DTS packages, server objects, and Agent Tasks. The most recent version expired a while back and was never replaced.

    Thanks,

    Martin

  • I think Idera has a tool similar to that in the Admin toolset. Not sure which tool it is but it was similar. MS SQL Health and History also collects similar information but the reports are not written to look at all the servers simultaneously so you have to write them yourself. The other bad thing about SQL H2 is that I have heard it will not be released for 2008. Not sure. I still use it for some things like an "environment matrix" of an overview of the servers that I have out there and the basic configuration of such.

  • Hi David,

    Thanks for the suggestions.

I had looked at Idera's admin toolset previously, but totally missed the comparison tools. There is some overlap between the admin toolset and the Quest Suite, and Idera's toolset has some nice tools that the Quest Suite lacks. The tools that allow the network to be scanned for new servers and the ability to check every database to see that it has been backed up recently with a single click look especially handy. But it doesn't have a couple of things I'm looking for in particular. The Quest ServerCompare tool compares pretty much all server configuration settings along with Agent jobs in a single result tree, and it provides scripts for synchronizing some or all.

H2 does some nice stuff, but it doesn't really fit what I'm trying to do. My goal is to quickly identify and synchronize/reverse changes between development/staging/production servers and relevant differences between servers that are involved in mirrored database pairs.

    Thanks,

    Martin
