Hello,
any pros or cons or experiences regarding the following install/config would be greatly appreciated:
OS = win 2008 SP1 STD. Ed (64 bit); 8GB mem
DB = sql server 2005 SP2 ... edition = ???
If we go with 64 bit platform, I was planning on using the mssql ent.ed ... or should i use std. ed?
also, is there a reason/advantage/disadvantage to using mssql2005 32 bit editions on a 64 bit OS?
many thanks.
jeff

The edition of SQL is really based on the features you need. If you want to use partitioning, online index operations, etc. use the Enterprise Edition. MS has feature comparisons on their website that are pretty clear.
Don't use the 32 bit version of SQL on a 64 bit server. In fact, I would go so far as to say don't use the 32 bit version of SQL at all anymore. It is a 64 bit world. If you have more than 4gb of memory on your server, you get significant improvements with the 64 bit version.

If this is a new install or you are upgrading from SQL 2000 or earlier, go with SQL 2008. The upgrade is essentially the same, it will save you an upgrade later, and you get some nice new features.
