I'm trying to connect remotely to a instance of SQL server 2005 through visual studio but the connection is constantly being timed out.
I believe that I have the server configured correctly -
-it allows windows and remote SQL authentication.
-SQL Server is running, SQL Server Browser is running, SQL Server Agent is running, TCP/IP is enabled and active for the IP address Im trying to log to
- The windows firewall is disabled on my computer and the server - the server does have McAffee but I believe I have disabled it properly
- Im logging in using xx.xx.xxx.xxx for the server name and the correct password and log in name for the instance
Here is the thing, I have visual studio on the remote computer and can log in to the server using the same TCP/IP properties on the remote computer. I can also connect to the remote computer from a different remote computer using hte same credentials, just not from my home computer. To the best of my knowlege all of my anti-virus/blocking software is disabled but I still can't connect to the remote server so I think the problem may be on my end. Is there a utility that I can use that can show me what is blocking my network connections?? I have been working on this problem for a good 12 hours and am at my wits end - any help is really appreciated - if you need more info please let me know - I really need help on this one.
Thank you.

Ok, I eventually stumbled upon the anwer. I changed from the default port 1433, to use a new one 1435 and it's working now.
