Running SQL Server 2005 Standard edition on Wiindows XP,originally installed without Replication Services, recently upgraded to SP1
Tried to setup replication (adding a new subscription): Got the error message:
TITLE: New Subscription Wizard
------------------------------
Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio is unable to access replication components because replication is not installed on this instance of SQL Server. For information about installing replication, see the topic Installing Replication in SQL Server Books Online.
etc...
Tried the instructions in the link; But because I have upgraded to SP1, the original 2005 setup program refuses to allow me to modify any of the installed components! Hence I cannot add replication services...
Any ideas, other than a complete uninstall/reinstall, then apply SP1?

You don't need to do a complete reinstall. SQL will let you install individual components. Run the setup program and follow through telling it to install only the replication component.

Certainly appreciate your response. One one of my computers, I was able to do exacty as you suggested. On another computer, I have "pending" updates that seem to be permenantly pending, due to a power failure a few weeks ago while in the midst of a window's update. These updates cannot be applied, other updates cannot be applied, and SQL will not let me run the installer, citing the inability to grab an installation mutex and recording in the installation log that there seems to be other updates pending.
Thanks again for your response. I need to go figure out how to clear those "hung" updates, which is certainly off-topic for this forum. No reply expected...

I've got the same problem but i can't select just replication, it select data files and shared tools aswell.
It then give me the following error:
Name: Microsoft SQL Server 2005 (64-bit)
Reason: Your upgrade is blocked. For more information about upgrade support, see the "Version and Edition Upgrades" and "Hardware and Software Requirements" topics in SQL Server 2005 Setup Help or SQL Server 2005 Books Online.
Build version check:
Your upgrade is blocked because the existing component is a later version than the version you are trying to upgrade to. To modify an existing SQL Server component, go to Add or Remove Programs in Control Panel, select the component you would like to modify, and then click Change/Remove.
