Pursuing 70-431 certification. What job title should I target...

  • I am currently reading through the MS Implementation and Maintenance book with the hopes of becoming certified as an MCTS for SQL Server 2005, and possibly heading into Business Intelligence and earning that certification. Lots of good study and certification tips on these forums!

My question involves the types of jobs available and what I should pursue once I have the certification, as my background has mainly been in technical support and not database administration. While browsing through employment websites, it seems as if junior level DBA positions prefer 1-3 years of experience with SQL Server, which I will not have, so what positions would be considered one step below that of a junior level DBA where I can still earn valuable experience with SQL Server 2005?

  • I think if you've had some experience and study to get the SQL cert, junior DBA is a job you should apply for. Don't forget that many people ask for more in job ads than they'd be willing to accept.

  • Hello and i would love to ask you a question please i am about to test out for the 70-431 and i would like to know how many times should i go through the book kit plus i have seen a testking lab kit dealing with the 70-431 please tell me some good studey advice and i do not have access to hands on besides the book..which seems very good plus i really want to be a Dba entry level  and i want to master this field....with all due respect as a veteran and pro please provide me with adequate advice to run and keep in storage for the near future... i have the implenmentation and installation study kit book for the above series give me your hard honest input please for entry level person with no prior experience please sir!!!!

  • I'm not sure how many times you should go through the book, but you should be able to add/delete/edit the following:

    - Logins

    - Users

    - Databases

    - Schemas

    - Roles

    - Permissions to any object

    - Linked Servers

For these, an edit should mean you understand what the various options on the properties dialogs for these items.

In addition, you need to be able to take a backup and understand the options, perform a restore, and create a job.

Any of these items are things you might be asked on the exam.
