Trying to restore a 2005 DB to a 2005 Server

  • Hi im hoping someone can shed some light on this for me.

    I get the following message.

Too many backup devices specified for backup or restore; only 64 are allowed.

RESTORE HEADERONLY is terminating abnormally. (Microsoft SQL Server, Error: 3205)

This occurs when I am trying to Restore a database file which I backed up from a live server, which is running 2005, to my development machine which is also running 2005.

I am running on a win XP Pro machine, I do also have a version of SQL Server 2000 installed, I was wondering if there is a conflict with that.

I have seen many explianations for this error stating that its because Im trying to restore on a 2000 Server, but in this instance this isnt the case.

    any help would be appreciated.

  • do you have the correct instance specified?

  • If figured it out, took a while though.

Firstly the install didnt install the 2005 DB server just the client tools.

Secondly by default it points back to the 2000 DB.

So after another reinstall with the DB server part, and changing the management console. I got it working.
