.NET Framework 2.0 (x64) Installation on the Wrong Drive

  • I have discovered a bug in the .NET Framework 2.0 64-bit installation. The Doctor Watson files don't always go on the C: drive.  In my case they went to the largest drive allocated to the server.  The installation does not allow you to specify the drive and this component is a prerequisite for SQL Server 2005.

Here is a link that discusses problem and how to fix it after the installation. http://forums.microsoft.com/MSDN/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=133881&SiteID=1

The fix in the above link involved hacking the registry.  I contacted Microsoft about a fix and they confirmed it is a known problem but is not rated high enough for a fix to be published.

The work around to prevent the problem is to

    1) Download Microsoft .NET Framework Version 2.0 Redistributable Package (x64)

    2) Setup the server to see only the C: drive

    3) Install .NET Framework 2.0 x64

    4) Add the drives back

    5) Install SQL Server 2005 x64
