Fantasy World

  • First a serious note. Thoughts and prayers out to those in New Orleans and the surrounding areas after the hurricane passed through. There may be thousands dead, but no one knows. Much like the Tsunami disasters in Sri Lanka and other areas around the Indian Ocean. SQLServerCentral.com author Dinesh Asanka lives in Sri Lanka and experienced that disaster first hand. He's fine, but we were worried about him when disaster struck.

Any SQLServerCentral.com members in the area, we're thinking of you and hoping you and yours are healthy and ok.

So last night was the fantasy football draft for myself and some former JD Edwards employees. It's not so much a competitive exercise for me; mostly a chance to support the bar tabs of some friends. If you're not familiar with fantasy football, you basically choose players or teams and then score points each week based on the real world performance and statistics in the NFL.

Mostly, however, it's a chance to spend an evening with some friends that I don't see that often. Despite nearly two years since JD Edwards disappeared and most of us left for other jobs, we still get together on a regular basis. There were 20 people on my team in IT and I see at least one of them every month, usually 3-4 or more, for lunch. Some more often than that.

That's never happened to me and it's a camaraderie that I really appreciate. Most of the time after I leave a job I may keep in contact with one or two people, but rarely at that. The two jobs before JD Edwards, I've kept in touch with 3 people between the two jobs, seeing them about once a year.

So my night in fantasy land, joking and giving friends a hard time, talking a little real (American) football.

  • Amen.
