I have inherrited two Windows authenticated SQL2000 servers on separate domains
There used to be a hack where having the same Windows Account/Password on two separate domains would allow one server to query the other. The MSSQLSERVER service on both boxes follows this rule.
Our network guys have said that since one of the SQL Servers has been replaced the two boxes do not talk to each other.
I'm thinking that adding these as linked servers should get around this but apparently this wasn't necessary in the original setup.
I'm weak on the Windows side of things so I should be grateful for any guidelines on getting the two servers talking to each other.

As long as there is an appropriate trust relatioship between the two domains you should be able to add the remote domain\user, or the appropriate group, to the logins.
