backup fail, device not connected

  • Hi all,

    One of our servers (running on SQL Server 2000, SP1) here have transaction log backup job failed once in a while with the following error in error log:

    BackupDiskFile::RequestDurableMedia:  failure on backup device 'E:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL\DATA\MSSQL\BACKUP\TEI_tlog_200407060500.TRN'.

    Operating system error 1167(The device is not connected.).

    Apparently, the device is there and connected, but SQL server couldn't recognize it.  Rebooting the server would usually resolve the issue.

    Anyone seen this issue before, or having any ideas of how to resolve this?

    Thanks a lot!

  • I've never had this problem but this sounds like a hardware maint issue.

    As a guess, the OS is on a local C: drive and the data/SQL Server is on a NAS. Or is it a local raid set.

    If it is the NAS have the network admins check the NAS log to see if it is getting any dropouts. Also check the fiber is good as well as the NAS card.

    If the E: is a local raid set - check for error logs and/ or bad drives.

    Good luck!

    A little bit of this and a little byte of that can cause bloatware.

  • Thanks a lot, Jim.

    E is a local drive, and the system log gave the same error "The device is not ready for access yet."  I agree this seems like a hardware/OS issue.
