I would like to find all sqlservers on a network, ideally resturning details like sql version including whether msde or full editions.
I have used isql -L and the sqlping utility and these pick up the majority, but some server I know of still do not show.
I have thought about using sms to look for a sepcific file on all servers, but would really like a simple all-encompassing method to scan the network.

DMO will detect any server on the network (within the subnet I think) that advertises it's existence.

Could you explain what I would do to 'use DMO'?
Thanks

SQL Scan runs on Windows 2000 or higher and can identify instances of SQL Server 2000 and MSDE 2000 running on Windows NT 4.0, Windows 2000, or Windows XP (Professional).

You might also take a look at the free SQL Slammer Retina Scanner from eEye Digital Security. It brute force checks a C-class range at a time. It'll return the info you're looking for. Of course, you'll be asked for some registration information.
