Peformance Monitor

  • I keep getting this error message. Help please! I am attempting to monitor a remote server from my local PC.

    Here is the message:

Unable to open the Performance Logs and Alerts configuration. This configuration is initialized when you use the Performance Logs and Alerts Management Console snapin to create a Log or Alert session.

  • Are you trying to start a counter log or are you trying to view in real time?

  • I am trying to start a counter log.

  • If you look at the services on your system (Start | Settings | Control Panel | Administrative Tools | Services), scroll down until you find the service "Performance Logs and Alerts." You'll need to modify the account the service runs under to be a domain account with administrative rights on the remote server.

If you're dealing with a Windows 2000 server, you can choose to Manage the server (Right-click on My Computer | Manage) and create the counter log there. The counter log would then run on the remote system and not on the local PC and as a result, the LocalSystem account is fine.

Of course, with NT4 servers, you've got to create the counter log on your local PC. We have a mix, so I keep my service up-to-date with my user account and password.
