Uninstalling a SQL 2005 Cluster on Windows 2008

  • I have successfully uninstalled SQL 2005 on both nodes of a two node Windows 2008 cluster and am attempting to reinstall SQL, but am receiving the following error:

"The specified Virtual Server name already exists on the network. To proceed, enter a unique Virtual Server name."

In Failover Cluster Management, the resource group shows that the cluster name, ip address, and cluster disks are online. To resolve this issue, is it just a matter of removing the resource group, recreating it under the same name, then adding the disk drives or is there more that needs to be done to complete the uninstall?

  • Just an update to close this out . . .

The SQL cluster resource group was deleted and I was able to complete the reinstallation of the SQL 2005 cluster. The only other issue that was encountered during the installation was an error message pointing to the "Microsoft.SqlServer.MSMQTask" COM+ component. After some research, it was determined that the component needed to be deleted before proceeding with the install. Once the COM+ component was deleted, the rest of the installation completed successfully.
