  • Another vote for Books Online. I have it open on my desktop all day, every day.

But, sometimes, on some topics, BOL can be structured funny, so having access to other books can make a difference. I'll recommend three, Ross Mistry's SQL Server 2008 Management and Administration, Joe Sack's SQL Server 2008 Transact-SQL Recipes, and Itzik Ben-Gan's SQL Server 2008 T-SQL Fundamentals. These are probably the best books for a beginner to have on their desktop.

On a side note, I also wrote part an introductory book, Beginning SQL Server 2008 Administration, but I don't think it's quite as good as the other books I mentioned. But hey, feel free to check it out too.

Thank you, very much, but I don't know that I'd recommend it to someone just getting started. They probably need some basic T-SQL before they start sweating execution plans.
