Service Pack 2 install fails due to previous upgrade not complete.

  • Hello everyone,

I wonder if someone could help with this problem I have. I was given the task to applying service pack 2 to an RTM of SQL 2005 Enterprise that I have inherited, no great shakes. But was faced with this error when it failed.

    Product : Database Services (MSSQLSERVER)

    Product Version (Previous): 1399

    Product Version (Final) :

    Status : Failure

    Log File : C:\Program Files\Microsoft SQL Server\90\Setup Bootstrap\LOG\Hotfix\SQL9_Hotfix_KB921896_sqlrun_sql.msp.log

    Error Number : 29565

Error Description : MSP Error: 29565 SQL Server Setup cannot upgrade the specified instance because the previous upgrade did not complete. Start the Remote Registry service and go to Add/Remove Programs, select the Change button for Microsoft SQL Server 2005, and then select SQL instance MSSQLSERVER and complete the setup.

Now I have followed the instructions laid out at the bottom, but it did not follow because I do not get anything that prompts me to complete setup, so as far as I am concerned its setup is completed. I have discovered that in the registery there is an entry at

    HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\MSSQL.1\Setup

and a DWORD entry of 'Resume' which is currently set to 1. I read in another post that a user edited it to 0 and successfully installed SP2. I am tempted to do the same but thought it would be a good idea to see if anybody else had done this previously, or if this was simply a silly thing to do because of possible bad ramifications.

Any advice at all on this would be much appreciated.

    Kind regards,

    D.

  • Are you running windows 2003 server? or Vista?

You should login as admin and reinstall SP2.
