I have read and re-read BOL regarding setting up database mail for SQL Server 2005 but I cannot get the darned thing to work. I must be thick. Why do we manage the difficult and trip up over the simple???
Can someone point me in the direction of a 'dummies' guide which explains what I'm doing (using the wizard) and why? I may be able to track through the process and find where I'm going wrong.

I'm beginning to get somewhere now. The log file shows the following error message
The mail could not be sent to the recipients because of the mail server failure. (Sending Mail using Account 1 (2009-05-22T11:57:33). Exception Message: Could not connect to mail server. (No connection could be made because the target machine actively refused it).
I've now sent a message to those who control the server to ask for an exception for the SQL Servers. Is this the right thing to do?
Is there anything else I can try to use to send a message when a job doesn't run?
