2005 32 to 64 bit upgrade - replication question

  • Hello all ...

Here is what I am planning to do:

upgrade an existing server from 2005 32 to 64 bit. I plan to wipe the server and start from scratch - including a fresh OS.

    Here is my problem:

my business relies on the replication that is currently running on this server (to multiple subscribers) to feed many business processes. Rebuilding this server will take no time, reattaching the databases, will take no time ... reinitializing subscribers from scratch (900) GB will take a good 2 days. So, obviously I would like to avoid it.

    Here is my question:

can I restore my system databases from the 32 installation to the 64 bit and start my replication back up right where it left off?

Thanks in advance for your advice. 🙂

  • You should be able to. The platform shouldn't matter for replication, and the disk format is the same for 32 and 64 bit databases.

However if you're worried, why not create a test db on a few servers, set up replication, and then move the publisher to 64 bit?

  • Thanks for the post.:-D

Brilliant minds think alike - I am setting up a test server right now. I also found this KB that says I can restore the system databases (which really is the issue), so long as the build is the same. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/264474

The build number should be the same, so we'll see. I will post back after my testing to report any pitfalls and discoveries. Surely someone else will do this at some point.

    😎
