Difference between LogShipping and Database Mirroring

  • Hello,

I am a newbie to High Availability. I would like to know the difference between LogShipping and Database Mirroring.

I could find some literature over WWW but its not clear. Because my understanding is they are more or less same.

    your help is much appreciated.

    Regards

  • It seems to me there's plenty of documentation about mirroring and log shipping. To be honest there's not much similarity and each has its advantages and disavantages. Full mirroring really requires enterprise edition whilst log shipping can be used with any edition.

It's down to what you want from your systems, log shipping is very reliable and easy to use, it also has the advantage of allowing protection against malicious or accidental data loss ( by restore and roll forward to point in time ) mirroring is like replication from the respect that if  data is lost in a database being replictated or mirrored then it's gone on your other database too.

HA is a balance of cost vs data availability - you take what you can afford based upon the business requirements.
