Automatic Failover using SQL 2005 Standard Edition

  • Hi,

I'm new to this group and to SQL Server 2005. We are in the planning stages for a new project and a question has come up about failover clustering in 2005. We are planning to use Windows 2003 Enterprise Edition with the Sql 2005 Std Edition. I've heard conflicting comments as to whether the failover clustering is automatic or manual when used with the Std Edition. I haven't found any documentation that specifically states one way or the other. Can anyone provide a definitive answer?

    Thanks in advance

  • Failover clustering is controlled by the cluster service, which is part of the operating system. This isn't related to SQL Server, with the exception that SQL Server 2000 Enterprise and SQL Server 2005 Standard and Enterprise make it easier on everyone by being cluster aware applications. Since you're using Windows Server 2003 Enterprise Edition, this should be handled. The cluster service can even fail-over applications which aren't cluster aware.
