Which SQL tool is better

  • We are considering to purchase some SQL tools. ERWin, RedGate or ApexSQL SQL tool. Can someone give some advice which is best? I used ERWin before, but not RedGate or ApexSQL. Thanks!

  • i have used erwin and redgate(some). and to compare the two will be a bit difficult because i think erwin has more bias to logical design of a db whereas the redgate tools i have used a bias towards the physical design/implementation.

in terms of usage depending on roles i would say: designer - erwin; developer/dba - redgate

and if you have the $$$ buy both, i think they are worth it

  • Thank you for the reply. Will the Redgate have the ability to reverse engineer and complete compare to save the data structure in file which I can store the file in the SourceSafe? I won't do lots of new table design. But need to save all the existing data structure. Thanks!

  • yes you can. just make sure your machine has enough ram

  • When I used the ERWin to complete compare, it seems I don't need that much Ram. Will RedGate cost more Ray to run?

  • no not really, its just a nice to have. i would probably think that your machine will cope.

actually why don't you get a fully functional app from the redgate site then you can see if you need more of anything as well as if it really fits into your scheme of things.

  • Yes it can do this (SQL Compare 6.0 Professional). It can save an existing database schema or individual objects into files, and can read in object definitions in various formats. It can also update these scripts in files in case you modify the database schema in the database.

There is a free fully functional trial on http://www.red-gate.com/products/SQL_Compare/index.htm
