SANs and database storage +/-

  • We have never had a SAN at our place but there is discussion about getting one now  (mainly for storage).

My question is this: assuming we install our sql 2000/2005 databases on a SAN what performance perks or  drawbacks should we expect to see? (I'm used to thinking of separate hard disk spindles and HBA channels, filegroups, etc. On a SAN we have a hundred disks, grouped into 18 disk RAID arrays -- I have no idea how this environment compares to the old one.)

    TIA,

P.S. Anyone know on whitepapers on this topic?
