On the new server registration dialog box, Connection Properties tab, one finds "Encrypt connection". This strikes me as peculair. What type of encrpytion? 3DES, AES, what bit strength? Certificates? All of these are hidden in this option.
Is encrypting all connections (and the data within them) between LAN clients and sql server 2005 as simple as selecting this check box?

By default SQL Server 2005 will generate a 512 bit certificate for this purpose. You will of course need to distribute the certificate to the clients.
You can, however configure it to use your own certificate as below:
