Happy Birthday

,

My birthday is coming up, though at 41 it's not one of those that you celebrate or fret over too much. Last year was a little more disconcerting to think about aging, but overall it didn't really affect me. We had a nice family dinner, the kids and my wife made me a great video collage of music and photos from our past, and that was about it.

People celebrate their birthdays in many different ways, however, and place differing amount of importance on the day. The day itself is not a big deal for my kids either, but they certainly want to be sure we celebrate at some time around their actual birthday, often asking for a family dinner on the day and a party either before or after.

In any case, after a few weeks of serious, DBA polls, I thought about a fun one for this Friday:

What Do You Want for Your Birthday?

I'm sure everyone has their own wants, desires, and needs. Here I'm hoping you might share something that's realistic, not the ultimate, money-is-no-object gift, but something that you could get and would really make you smile on that special day.

I have to admit I struggle with this one quite a bit. I've been very successful and lucky in life, and combine that with fairly simple needs, there isn't a lot I want. More tools are always nice, but honestly I like to pick those up as I need them and I want the experience of picking them out (manly grunt, grunt here).

I have my dream car, and the only thing that I might really enjoy, materially, would be a hot tub. I've wanted one, but never really gotten around to spending the money, despite the fact I usually take advantage of them when I'm at a hotel or gym.

I know it's material, and there are plenty of other things to want, but gifts should be fun, should be enjoyable, and something you wouldn't necessarily buy for yourself. So think about it, and give us some idea of what you'd enjoy receiving after a family chorus of "Happy Birthday!"
