The Joy of Contracting

,

As you may or may not know I have been contracting since 2007, almost 4 years now and I have to say that it has been best business/career decision that I have made, even through the worst recession since the 1930's have managed maintain  paying work and hopefully ’touch wood’ that continues in the future.

I had an experience recently where a deal went wrong, this is the first time in my contracting career that a real 'bad thing' happened to me. Basically a deal went bad when I thought it was signed and sealed. I'm not going to go into the ‘nitty gritty’ of it here, but it did get me thinking about contracting, running a business and how it differently things play out compared to permanent employment. In hindsight and on reflection there is very little that I could have done to prevent this deal going bad. I did though want to learn from it.That gave me an idea that maybe I could write a little about my contracting experiences to help others who may be trying to do the same thing as myself.Contracting is all about making the deal

So with that in mind I have launched a sub-domain on my blog where I will talk about contracting, this will generally be a UK focused but I'm sure there will be something to help contractors and business owners  who live and work outside the UK. Also I'm not going to re-invent the wheel either, there are some other good sites out there that will  cover an issue better than me I will happily re-direct you there for more information.

The contracting side of this blog will not be included in my blog main feed, you will need to subscribe to it separately. I have done this because most of the readers of my main blog are there because I write predominately about SQL Server and I do not want to dilute or mix-up the contracting stuff with my SQL Server writing.

My contracting blog can be found here http://contracting.gethynellis.com/ if this is something that you are interested in, or even currently doing please feel free to subscribe to the feed, contributions, thoughts and opinions welcome.
