Teaching Children to Program

,

One of the blogs I follow is Andrew Coates' blog over at MSDN. He has posted about starting to help a group of children learn how to program. It's a very interesting read with respect to what the children came up with as what they wanted to do and how he has started them out. You can read about it here:

Teaching "Programming" to Primary School Kids

Outside of IT I serve as a children's minister for my local church and I've worked with children teaching a wide range of subjects from alcohol/drug prevention, soccer (football), chess, to the Bible. One area I've not approached is teaching children how to program, though I was taught at a very young age (3rd grade, when I was 9). I've been considering how to start my oldest son on programming, since he is turning nine, so needless to say, I'll be following this thread with quite a bit of interest.
