On a side note, my gaming rig still runs Vista (yes, it's that old). It's about to be upgraded in the next month or two which means I'm getting Windows 8, so I've just started to look into the review sites. I have no idea if they're right or not yet.

Don't feel too bad. My "gaming rig" is running XP Pro. Unlike you I have no immediate upgrade plans. Of course the lack of an upgrade plan is mostly because there really aren't any games that interest me at the moment.

Ha - mine is still running WFW3.11 - I think. Haven't touched it in a while

Any self respecting gamer from that time period would have used an Amiga. They had all the good games.

Populous was a great game.

A drink might be enough at the watercooler, with that uncomfortable stare at everybody else at the watercooler.

As recent as 2008 or so, my regular desktop was a 500 mhz with 512 ram. I had two faster computers, but they were strictly for cpu intensive stuff like audio rendering that I didn't want bogging down my desktop with, so for whatever reason, my desktop was often the 500mhz system running a very ratty and out of date linux circa 2003 maybe. In that, if I needed to log into work, I ran xp sp2 in a virtual machine with vmware player so I could use the company vpn. Yep, didn't spend much money on computers thats for sure

Without addressing any person here at all, I'm going to summise this would not work with 8 taking xp's place in that configuration!

I'm pretty sure you are right about that. MS some time back recommended a minimum RAM size of 1GB for 32-bit systems, 2GB for 64-bit. Perhaps not a big problem for Microsoft though, as it's been pretty hard to buy a system with only 512MB RAM for quite a few years now.

Maybe if it were the water cooler in the refectory of a Trappist monastery .... after all for many people possession of a few crates of Westvleteren XII could that mean their mouths were too busy .to be used for talking, couldn't it?

The media server piece is pretty cool. Once you have the raspbmc software, lots of add ins for audio/video/images that you can use. I'm now thinking how I might add a screen for this in the kitchen.

There's a nice missing note in this warning from Steve in the Employer / Employee section - it surprises me that it has survived over six years without correction:

This forum is designated as a place where you can discuss positive or negative issues about your employer. Remember this is a public forum, so don't post anything you'd want your employer to read.
