Hi All,
I am not new to SSC, but ya new to this portion.
I want to do a cetification in SQL Server, but dont have any idea.
Please let me know what would be more preferable, to do certification in 2005, or 2008? And which certificate?

Without more details of what you want to do, and your background, it's hard to suggest
Are you a Developer, a DBA person, etc...

You should have experience on the platform. Which one have you worked with? If it's 2005, get that cert. If it's 2008, get that.
Achieving the certification without using the product doesn't prove you know anything, and it doesn't help the certification process.

Yes champion(Steve), you are right! But that's my confusion point.
Actually, I have experience in SQL Server 2005 as we are using it (earlier we were using 2000). But now we are planning to migrate on SS2K8.
So, i m here to take expert's advice. 🙂

As you are currently using SQL Server 2005, I'd certify on that platform first. You can upgrade your cert as you migrate to SQL Server 2008. If I remember correctly, it is only one test to upgrade your cert from 2005 to 2008. You'll need to check the Microsoft site certification site to be sure.

Now, once i get MCTS-2005, then can i apply for MCTS-2008?

You can sit for multiple exams at the same time, if you have the patience. I've done it before, it's time consuming...

If you don't have experience on the platform, you will have a difficult time with the tests. You really should do the SQL 2005 certification.

Hi Robert,
Currently i m working on both 2k5 and 2k8.. we are planning to upgrade all our systems from 2k5 to 2k8 soon.
That's y i choose 2k8 for certification.
But i never appeared for any MS certification exam before. That's i was confuse... So, now is my decision for 2k8 is correct?

You should have a reasonable amount of experience with the product before writing the cert exam. If you have not worked on 2008 you will struggle with the 2008 exams. If you only have experience now with 2005, write the 2005 exams. You can always write the upgrade exams later when you do have 2008 experience.

I'd agree with Gail. The certs aren't going to help you learn 2008 or do the upgrade. It's the other way around.
