best way to setup SSAS DR

  • what is the best way to setup the SSAS DR between two data centers?

setup SSAS as a fail over cluster between two data center?

or there is another way around?

    Any help is appreciated.

  • Based on what I have searched, for HA fail over cluster and for DR just schedule the backup and restore of SSAS databases. one thing that would come in to my mind will be , once you restore to a new server, will it be required to process the cube again or just the restore will be enough?

    response is appreciated.

It depends on whether or not the cube will be looking at a different data source/different data. Since this is for DR I would guess that the data should be the same so there is no absolute need to reprocess. However, you may need to change the data source connection string; if you are using ROLAP or HOLAP storage methods then you will definitely need to do this. You might also need to check that permissions are the same on your DR box - if you are using Roles then you should be ok.

Since there are things you might need to tweak you may be better off doing the backup/restore with an XMLA script as you can make all the tweaks in one place.

Let us know what you come up with as SSAS DR is not something (at least that I've seen) often discussed 🙂

  • Your research is right , HA is done using cluster and DR is done using Backup and restore. Reprocessing is not required if the backup is taken after the cube has been processed. You could also perform SAN replication instead of implementing HA but this option doesnt allow failover and needs proper testing.
