  • Steve,

    "Happy Memorial Day"?

Reflective, yes, certainly. Somber, perhaps. Happy? Not really -- it's not supposed to be that kind of a holiday.

Reflecting on all those that have been lost, I'm VERY happy that their sacrifice was not in vain. So, "Happy Memorial Day" and high salutes to those who have made and continue to make it possible.

  • I think that we should consider ALL those who have sacrificed themselves for what they believed in the greater good. All around the world, in many conflicts and at many times men, women and children have sacrificed themselves for others.

Some have been misguided, in my opinion, and we should look to educate all to minimise the occurances of these type of sacrifices, however, we should also build upon the sacrifices of all to further us towards the goal of world peace in the face of the likelihood of it never happening.

Happy Memorial Day? Not for me but I am happy in the life I lead. I have benefitted from the ultimate sacrifice given by others and I acknowledge that.

  • At my age, 64, I have a lot of years to reflect back on. I give thanks to those who have made that possible.

  • Thanks to all our service men and women who have given so much so we can live the way we do.

Anyone looking for a good book related to Memorial Day and our armed forces could check out "When Hell was in Session", the story of Admiral Jeremiah Denton. He was shot down during the early stages of the US's involvement in the Vietnam Conflict, and was tortured for years until his release. I'm in the middle of reading it now and it really strikes me how he and his fellow POWs were able to endure so much. Truly heroic sacrifice for us and our country.
