Our experience is that there isn't a strong relationship in the database engine. For our installation, I find it's more a question of the strength of the disk under our logs/backups. We do both to the same RAID. That is, the RAID being our fastest disk, the database logs are there AND we perform backups to that disk then pull them off in a separate step. If both index maintenance and log backups overlap, log backups are measurably slower during that period. We try not to have DB backups and index maintenance overlap, but when they do, the performance difference is very obvious.
