In SSMS, Registered Server window in blank

  • Hi Folks,

I've just installed a new instance of SQL Server Express 2008 R2 on a new PC.

I want to import my list of registered servers from my old PC (also running SQL Server Express 2008 R2) that I have previously backed up.

However, in my Registered Servers window in SMMS on the new machine, there are no nodes, no Local Server Group, No Database Engine, nothing.

There is also no right-click context menu.

I have tried registering a server by right clicking on it's name and selecting the Register option, which was successful, but still nothing is displayed in the registered servers window.

Please can anyone advise me how I can populate the Registered Servers window once more?

    Thanks in advance,

    Chris

  • Hi again,

I found a solution for this issue after trawling the internet for a bit.

    http://www.dbtalk.net/microsoft-public-sqlserver-tools/ssms-2008-a-512328.html

Basically in my user profile, I backed up and then deleted the regsvr.xml file in

    \Application Data\Microsoft\Microsoft SQL Server\100\Tools\Shell\RegSrvr.xml.

After restarting SSMS, the default tree in Registered Servers (Database Engine >> Local Server Groups etc.) had been recreated.

    Thanks. 🙂

  • I had the same issue, when trying to remove sql server 2008 R2 in order to downgrade to sql server 2008, and after installing sql server 2008, my registered servers windows went blank too.

Your solution did the trick, thx 😉

  • My Registered servers window went blank after a failed import, but only after an SSMS restart!

thanks for the solution, it worked for me 🙂
